After months of cold Dunedin mornings and the heat pump working overtime, it’s time to give it a little TLC. Once winter wraps up, there’s usually a bit of dust, moisture and general build-up that can affect how well it runs. A few quick checks now can keep it working better, save power, and make your space feel fresh again.

A little attention goes a long way. Whether you’re at home or in the office, giving your heat pump some post-winter love keeps your space warm, dry and happy.

💧 1. Clean your filters (the easy way)

Filters do all the hard work catching dust and lint through winter. When they get clogged, airflow drops and the unit has to work harder to heat or cool the room.

Here’s how to clean them properly:

How to clean your heat pump filters:

  1. Turn the unit off

  2. Lift the front panel and gently remove the filters

  3. Give them a light vacuum or rinse with warm water

  4. Let them dry completely before putting them back in

It’s quick, simple and you’ll notice cleaner air almost straight away.

❄️ 2. Check for leaks or frost around the unit

A little bit of condensation under your heat pump is normal, especially when it’s been running on defrost mode. If you spot constant dripping or a small puddle, that might mean it’s time for a check-up.

Think of it like getting your car serviced, a quick check now can stop small problems becoming expensive ones later.

🔋 3. Replace your remote batteries

If the screen on your remote looks a bit dim or it takes a few clicks to respond, it’s probably just low batteries. Swap them out and mark the inside of the cover with today’s date so you know when they were last changed. It’s one of those little things that makes a big difference.

🧼 4. Give your heat pump a quick wipe-down

Even in clean spaces, dust and cobwebs collect around vents and surfaces. Wipe everything down and check the outdoor unit if you have access to it. Keeping the area clear helps air flow better and makes your space look tidy too.

🔥 5. If you use a fireplace at home, clear out the ashes

If you’ve been running a wood burner through winter, empty out most of the ashes but leave a thin layer at the base. It helps next season’s fire catch faster and retain heat better. While you’re at it, make sure the chimney or vents aren’t blocked.

💡 Quick post-winter checklist

✅ Clean filters every 3 months

✅ Replace remote batteries once a year

✅ Check for leaks or frost

✅ Wipe down vents and outdoor unit

✅ Book a professional service once a year
