Pest Control - How to Avoid Rats and Mice

As much as the kids love Stuart Little, he's not the type of guest you want visiting your home!

Rodents are not fussy as to who they share their house with and often people are unsure as to how to deal with them and who is responsible to get rid of them.

A frequent sighting of rats or mice may not necessarily mean you have an infestation. The first steps to eradicating any problems occurring are to ensure:

• No uncovered food is left lying around
• There are no rubbish bags on the ground and or with lids off
• Rubbish must be disposed of as soon as practicable, at least once a week
• Make sure that there are no holes in walls, cupboards, floors that they can come in by. Mice only need a 6mm gap to enter your home!
• Eliminate water sources. Rats are attracted to water, creeks, taps, pipes and drains
• Ensure that grass, hedges and bushes are trimmed regularly, and that vegetation is removed

The first thing to do if you hear a rodent, or see signs of their whereabouts, is to set a trap or bait. These are easily found at your local shop or hardware store for minimal cost. Sometimes putting a cat in the same room will work a treat too!
